Making a Demo Reel
By Frey | August 3, 2007
When running a film company, you see a lot of demo reels - some are good, but many are bad. I always try to give someone the same attention that I hope they would give me in a similar situation, but sometimes these demo reels are hard to watch.
Here’s some advice:
1st. Make sure the demo reel works. Play it over and over and use the interface. If you run into a problem, then throw out that DVD and make a new one that works.
2nd. Use only your best stuff. ANYTHING else is not worth it. Don’t put that gag reel in there that your friends and you all shot together - it may be funny to you, but to a potential employer, it’s rubbish.
3rd. Update your demo every 6 months.
4th. NO MISTAKES. You can’t have a single mistake in your demo reel. Even the smallest mistake is a flag for a potential employer to NOT hire you - it means you’re work is sloppy.
5th. All work in there had better be labeled correctly - if you were the editor, label yourself thusly. If you were the AC, DON’T label yourself as the Cinematographer!!!
6th. Have a friend watch it and play with it (to look for bugs). If they aren’t impressed, then your potential employer probably won’t be either…
