Michael Phelps: An Olympic Champion from Maryland

Okay, this is a little off-topic, but I felt like doing a little writing:
I just wanted to point out that Maryland is a very proud state, but often-times when asked what we are proud of, we don’t know. We are definitely proud of our Maryland Blue Crabs, but somehow even that is getting slowly replaced by Blue crabs out of the Gulf (due to over-crabbing in the Chesapeake, which, btw, we are also very proud of).

But, we are often not really sure what the pride of Maryland is – what makes us so proud to be from this great state? It’s a thinker for many of us…

But then along came Michael Phelps, a Marylander, and his Olympic swimming which won a total of 8 Gold Medals. Wow. Maryland starts to realize what we are proud of: ourselves. We have a lot of good people in this state that take pride in what they do – that may be why Maryland became the richest state in the union last year (the average median household income was almost $650 more per year than the average household in the next richest state, which, btw, was New Jersey).

Okay, so I’m not really talking about film here. But I am talking about pride in where I live. It’s one of the reasons I hate seeing those “I hate the town I live in” films – they are often so cliché and, even more, they too often show that the film maker has no sense of what pride is.

Hmm. Maybe I’d better shut up about film now and get back to congratulating Michael Phelps for his Olympic achievements. I know it took a lot of effort and I can appreciate what he did.

Thanks Michael!
