You may not know that you subconsciously notice triangles in pictures, but you do. Maybe it goes back to our hunter-gatherer days when we’d look into the trees for food, or to make sure there wasn’t a hungry leopard ready to pounce. As you’ll notice, branches extending from the tree make a “V”, and the added shape of a squirrel, a bird, or even a leopard would easily turn it into a triangle.
Or maybe we’re programmed to notice triangles because of hills and valleys? At the bottom of most valleys lies water in the form of a stream, river, or lake. Not only do we need water to live, but many animals gather near the streams because they also need water to live…
Or maybe none of the above is correct? Who knows. But, nevertheless we are drawn to triangles in images. A “V” is basically a triangle without the third ...

OK, consider this “Part I” of an on-going group of postings, here at MarylandFilms.com, on how-to make an independent film on the cheap. Believe it or not, you don’t need to go to a four year film college to learn how to make an independent film. A film college most likely won’t be offering you a film class on “film finance – the art of producing a feature film”. It also won’t offer you the know-how on making an entire film from scratch. A Film College is there to teach you how to do things, but the classes are often designed for big budget films. They also often teach you the use of film software that will be outdated by next year, with more emphasis on the software than on the ability to do the work with proper knowledge.
For instance, when teaching about editing a film, there needs to be an emphasis ...

A career in filmmaking… It sounds exciting, all the hot bodies walking around on set, the money, the exciting action sequences, the stunts, the…
Okay, in case you didn’t know, the above descriptions are pretty much a misnomer. A career in filmmaking means a LOT of hard work. Just the amount of work you have to do in order to FIND work in the film industry is hard. You try and try and try to get a foot in the door. Depending on your location, this can take weeks, months, and even years…
When you finally land a gig, you quickly find that there are many long days and nights involved. Sometimes they are extremely boring days and nights. Sometimes they are absolutely hectic. Sometimes you start work at 6AM and work so hard for so long, that you don’t even get lunch and/or dinner, only to wrap for the day at ...

I’d like to comprise a list of Video Production Companies in the area. If you are a member of one of these video production companies that wants to network with others (small or large, it doesn’t matter the size of your company), then please use the comments section to add your name, your company name, and a link to your site.
Why? Because networking is where its at in the film/video industry. Those Video production companies that network end up getting their names out there a lot more than those that don’t…
So go ahead and list yourself and your company name already!

Production Crew Positions needed for Star Wipe Films feature film in Baltimore and Washington, D.C. for 3-4 weeks, starting August.
Production crew positions available for Baltimore area feature film!
After the successful completion of the short film “Godfather Death,” (www.starwipefilms.com/godfatherdeathmovie.html) Star Wipe Films, in association with an independent action film producer, is currently accepting applications for essential crew positions. Production is tentatively scheduled for a 3-4 week shoot during late August and early September 2008.
Pay: Pay is negotiable based on experience and position, but volunteers are preferred. Travel reimbursement is available, and will be paid weekly.
Night Shoots: A majority of the film calls for night shooting, with both interior and exterior locations.
Part Time Crew: Since we are hoping for volunteer support from the film community, we realize that a 3-4 week commitment is unlikely. If you would like to help out on set in order to gain ...

From time to time I talk to someone that claims to be a Director of Photography (cinematographer). But once I get into the conversation with them, it becomes apparent, rather quickly, that the person has no idea about the art and science of lighting a film set (or High Definition/video set). There seems to be no how or why in it for them – it’s just “put some light on the person talking and shoot.”
Okay, let me stop here a second to say that I am not going to go into detail (today anyway) about 3 or 4 point lighting techniques (or really any lighting techniques). There are many good books out there that you can buy (and I do recommend buying and reading a few) that teach proper lighting, if you don’t already know.
By the way: you actors should be reading these books as well, since it’s your face ...
